James M. Thompson served as the 12th Vice President of Liberia from January 7, 1884 to January 4, 1892 under President Hilary R. W. Johnson, who was the first Liberian-born president. Running on the True Whig Party ticket, Johnson was reelected four times, along with Thompson who held the position of Vice President during the full tenure of Johnson’s presidency, which ushered in an uninterrupted True Whig Party dominated leadership of the country until the April 12, 1980 coup d’état.
