This is an interesting documentary about the incredible story of a place called “Monkey Island” in Liberia, where over 60 chimpanzees were released after being infected with contagious diseases, such as hepatitis, as part of medical research conducted by a team of US virologists at the now defunct Liberia Institute for Biomedical Research during the 1980s.

The head of the project, Besty Brotman, tells the story about the project’s inception and how she and her husband stayed behind during Liberia’s civil war to care for the chimpanzees.
